Walking away without noticing |

I came to a realization the other day. It's strange, it had probably been 2 months since I bought a diecast car at all. To let you know how far away from the game I went, I was on a trip to Denver for work, and I only went to ONE TRU. And what's more, I never went to the diecast aisle. I only went to the McFarlanes section to find Johnny U. For the longest time, I was simply uninspired by what I was seeing. Hot Wheels, to me, sucked. Blings bore me, Torpedos look stupid and won't go through superchargers and "Realistix" that don't meet the requirement of being, you know, realistic... Matchbox Superfasts that look pretty much the same as mainline Matchbox, except that they have a little box... JL seeming to only make the PT Cruiser and GM's rip-off of the PT Cruiser... Even the Maisto and Jada cars weren't doing it for me. "Oh look" I'd say, yawning. "Same as all the others, but with different sticker." The other day I stumbled onto some of the new Hot Wheels with the Hot Wheels, and picked up a few. Made me realize how long it's been. So I broke out the spreadsheet with all the cars listed that I needed and I realized something. It wasn't that Hot Wheels bored me, it was that I had no freakin' idea what all the cars were, what series they were from or what were First Editions and what weren't. Are Track Aces considered First Editions? They've all been out before. I took all the 2005 Hot Wheels that I have amassed to this point and shoved 'em all in a box. Shipped out to Goodwill. Screw it. I don't have the time or the energy to try and figure it all out. I collect for fun, I shouldn't have to create an elaborate database to track variations and manufactured rarity. If collecting annoys me, I stop. Simple as that. So there, on my shelf is a giant hole. Every first edition since 1995. Minus the 2005s. I canned them all. Four Hunts in there too. *sigh* I noticed on the 2006 Nissan Silvia that HW appears to have returned to the 1 of 36 ideal. No more series and crap. Good. I spent yesterday on a good, old fashioned hunt and came home with nothing but Superfasts. I'm still uninspired, but at least this series is easily determinable. I think the strangest part is the fact that I didn’t realize I had “walked away”. Outside pressures contributed to be sure, but I didn’t have that “need”. I guess I should thank them all. They bored me straight. Just now, I went back to HWC.com and looked in the shop. I see that I missed: nothing of consequence. I strolled over to the bored [sic] and see also that I missed nothing of consequence. *yawn* The last time that I felt this flat and uninspired was when the Turbo went up in the Passat. For a week, I had a Dodge Stratus rental. It was like driving to work asleep. I wonder if it’s only me. Is everyone feeling, well, bored with the situation? Walk down the aisle and it’s mainline, classics in new colors, motorcycles, NASCAR and street cars with new and exciting stickers. I guess the manufacturers like it this way. It’s been a successful formula in NASCAR for years. Exact same thing with new paint on it, sell the same recycled garbage hundreds of times. No effort, no energy, still sell everything. Maximum sales, minimum effort. *yawn* I see Mattel has decided to Moo upon the Classics movement. The Drag Truck will be in the Classic assortment. Yay. And they’ve decided to enter the Maisto/Jada Market again with the G Machines. I didn’t know Xerox Machines could produce diecast. I’ll have to try that at work next week. *yawn* I guess I can start collecting Bottle caps. It’s too much to ask that a line of Classics be put out with all new castings or scaled back versions of RLC reproductions. You know, the “classics”. Poison Pinto, King Cuda, stuff like that. Bah, I’m only one collector. What do I know? What am I worth? Well, over the last few months, I’ve probably saved about 400 bucks on diecast. -43Goalie |
