Hot Wheels Jeep CJ-5 Modified

It's a Jeep Thing. You often see that on bumper stickers attached to various Jeep vehicles. The little utility truck with the humble start as a military vehicle has spawned an entire culture of Jeep fanatics. I've never owned one personally, but I've always had a yearning for one, And if I ever do get one, I would want it to be decked out just like this 1:18 from Hot Wheels. Let's take a look.

This model is fairly small for a 1:18th scale vehicle, about the size of most 1:24th cars. But that's OK, since real Jeeps aren't all that big. This baby rides high on Goodyear knobby's and lifted suspension with two shocks per corner. And it has all the tools a serious off roader needs for back country rides.

Dual Jerry Cans in a silver painted rack provide a little extra gas in case your travels take you out a bit too far into the woods. The simple round taillights are painted in a great chrome red that gives the illusion of illumination.

A winch is provided should you get this thing stuck in a ravine. The same chrome treatment was given to the front turn signals. And here's a cool detail--the trademark seven slot grille is completely cut through and you can actually see the gap between the grille and the radiator. Nice!

Behind that radiator you'll find all the ponies you need to climb the tallest hills. A great custom V-8, topped off with a pair of oil charged air filters atop dual carbs. The engine sits high--so high that a pair or clearance holes are provided in the hood so you can close it.

The interior is perfect for any off road situation. Completely made out of diamond plate, it's set up for a quick rinse to remove any souvenirs from an outback adventure. There's an added tach on the column, center mounted speedo, and passenger grab bar. And of course, a chrome roll bar.

If the wheels and tires ain't right, the whole car ain't right. This truck rides on heavy chromed 8 spoke rims, wrapped in meaty Goodyear off road tires.

And just in case, there is a spare in the back. Same rim, and there's also a three bar spinner type hold down. Nice detail.

And of course, no Jeep is complete without a flip down windshield. Perfect for getting a little air while hill climbing, or that extra snack while traveling down the highway.

The undercarriage is extensively detailed with diamond plate structures, and all the suspension components expected in a utility vehicle of this caliber. The driveline for the four wheel drive system is just as detailed. Very nice. Just one more little note about the Jeep. Popular opinion is that the Jeep got it's name way back in it's military infancy from the two letters "GP" for General Purpose vehicle. GP became Jeep, and a legend was born.
