Hunting with the boy...
| As a father and son team we seem to have quite a bond that
goes way beyond Hot Wheels. This all started when my wife was almost 5
months pregnant with our first child... His name is Shane and by time he was
introduced to this world I had quite a nice collection laid out for him...Its
very funny how we can go way over board on the things we buy our kids .The Hot
Wheels just sat there watering for the day the boy was old enough for them. I
think we pulled them all out on his first birthday. Man to give a one year old a
Hot Wheel ... yep.. Straight into the mouth. We started putting them up on a
shelf.. This way we could monitor the boy to make sure he was not trying to cram
the darn thing in his mouth!
I figure we started letting him play with the cars when he was about two to two n a half. Its been a challenge . the boy was very hard on his cars. Over the years I have been buying him cars on a fairly regular basis. He has become very responsible with his cars. At last count he was up over 400 loose cars. In all respect he has actually been collecting longer than I have. I did not get the bug tell about 5 years ago. But the boy {now age 9} has been collecting for almost 10 years... All because his dad was getting him cars since the day he learned it was going to be a boy!! We go to the stores late at night and we love to hunt cars
together. Last night I was just watching him as he dug a huge hole into the dump
bin at Wal-Mart. Its really cool to see someone his age take such a serious
approach to these cars. It kills me sometimes to tell him NO! he has become
competitive and I think its a total kick in the shorts...He has gotten to the
point of age where he wants the new cars ..He has been showing more interest in
the hunts. He bounces off the walls when the Space City Hot Wheels Club meeting
comes rolling round. I have gotten to the point where I give him 20 bucks at the
start of the day!!! All the choices he makes are his own and he opens every car
he gets!. Sometimes that just kills me!...Collectors have big hearts and I have
seen this time and time again. The kids seem to bring out the good in all of
us.. Scott (Redwingguy) Thorson Note from Joe: I met Scott and his son Shane at the Space City meeting recently. And I gotta tell you that this young man knows his cars, and is quite the collector and dealer. I saw him snag a 1996 Collector #502 Nomad for two bucks!! And when we all stopped at a Collectibles Store afterwards, he was right there with us, oohhing and ahhing over the cars. I just love seeing kids taking an interest in the hobby, since when you dig right down, these cars are for the kids!!
